Side rails, optic brackets and eye position

The familiar receiver-side rail solves a structural problem: it supports a removable optic without depending on the detachable receiver cover.

Why a receiver-side rail exists

The AK receiver cover is designed as a removable enclosure rather than as the main structural bridge for an optic. Many Soviet and national configurations therefore place a fixed rail on the receiver's left side. A matching bracket clamps to that rail and carries the optic above or slightly left of the bore line.

“AK side rail” is still a broad phrase. Rail profiles, bracket stops and receiver placement vary across national and model families. A side bracket that resembles another pattern is not automatically compatible. This page describes the standard historically and does not provide fitting or adjustment instructions.

The offset-bracket arrangement

An offset bracket rises from the side rail and bridges toward the centre line. Its geometry must clear the receiver cover and controls while placing the eyepiece in a usable position. Some brackets remain visibly offset; others centre an optic more closely. The bracket itself can carry a dedicated scope or a secondary rail interface.

Because the mount approaches from the side, the top cover can remain removable within the original system concept. Repeatability depends on the complete rail-and-bracket pairing and its condition, not simply on the presence of a locking lever.

The PSO pattern

PSO-pattern optics are closely associated with Soviet and related side-rail systems. Their characteristic features include an integrated offset bracket, a relatively compact optical tube and a reticle designed around military reference tasks. Closely similar housings can conceal different reticles, illumination arrangements or rail interfaces, so the exact model marking matters.

Not every optic seen on an AK-pattern rifle is a PSO, and not every side-mounted scope uses the same rail. “PSO-style” is a visual description; it should not replace a verified designation.

Eye relief and stock geometry

Eye relief is the distance at which the viewer sees the intended field through the eyepiece. Stock length, cheek contact, bracket height and optic position all affect that relationship. A setup designed around one stock profile may feel different with an underfolder, sidefolder or thumbhole stock. Receiver-cover and other mount concepts

Historical and commercial mounts have also used the receiver cover, rear-sight area or handguard region. Each approach works with different structural constraints. A cover-based arrangement must account for a part that is removable in the original field-maintenance concept; a forward arrangement changes eye position and optic type.

This reference neither recommends a mount nor explains installation. For historical identification, record the rail profile, bracket form, optic markings and relationship to the receiver before assigning a standard name.
